{"id":6500,"date":"2013-12-04T20:16:46","date_gmt":"2013-12-05T01:16:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.billdawers.com\/?p=6500"},"modified":"2013-12-04T20:16:46","modified_gmt":"2013-12-05T01:16:46","slug":"yes-michelle-nunn-has-a-chance-to-win-georgias-open-senate-seat-a-good-chance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.billdawers.com\/2013\/12\/04\/yes-michelle-nunn-has-a-chance-to-win-georgias-open-senate-seat-a-good-chance\/","title":{"rendered":"Yes, Michelle Nunn has a chance to win Georgia&#8217;s open Senate seat &#8212; a good chance"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"e26b170012445c56d240655bdd03f7bf\" data-index=\"1\" style=\"float: left; margin: 10px 10px 10px 0;\">\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\r\ngoogle_ad_client = \"ca-pub-5595881567027133\";\r\n\/* Medium Rectangle *\/\r\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"8584504377\";\r\ngoogle_ad_width = 300;\r\ngoogle_ad_height = 250;\r\n\/\/-->\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"\r\nsrc=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Obama campaign expended little money or effort in Georgia in 2012, but he still took <a href=\"http:\/\/results.enr.clarityelections.com\/GA\/42277\/113204\/en\/summary.htmlhttp:\/\/results.enr.clarityelections.com\/GA\/42277\/113204\/en\/summary.html\" target=\"_blank\">45.5 percent<\/a> of the vote in Georgia. <\/p>\n<p>President Obama is very unpopular in some quarters of the state, so it seems more than reasonable to conclude that a Democrat with more positives or fewer negatives could attract enough votes to beat a Republican in a statewide race. <\/p>\n<p>Those numbers right there are enough to suggest that Democrat Michelle Nunn has a very good chance to win Georgia&#8217;s open Senate seat.<\/p>\n<p>But will the Obama coalition &#8212; dominated by Georgia&#8217;s black residents &#8212; turn out in sufficient numbers? Of course they will. Black turnout has been increasing for the last 20 years across the country; the Obama team will push hard to increase turnout among core Democratic constituencies in advance of the 2014 midterm elections; Democratic leaders are well aware that much of the Obama agenda relies on keeping control of at least one house of Congress.<\/p>\n<p>And Nunn has a lot of things going for her, at least on the surface. Many Georgians would like to see a woman elected to the Senate. Nunn also has some automatic credibility &#8212; rightly or wrongly &#8212; because she&#8217;s the daughter of Sam Nunn. It will be interesting to see at what point, if at all, the Nunn campaign uses the father in advertising and in appearances.<\/p>\n<p>And Nunn has been getting some very good press, including last week from <a href=\"http:\/\/savannahnow.com\/opinion\/2013-11-30\/michelle-nunn-refreshing-democrat#.Up_OXWRDvA5\" target=\"_blank\">the conservative editorial page of the Savannah Morning News<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>That editorial was so curiously positive that I posted to Peach Pundit about it: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peachpundit.com\/2013\/12\/02\/savannah-morning-news-editorial-page-has-some-kind-words-for-michelle-nunn\/\" target=\"_blank\">Savannah Morning News editorial page has some kind words for . . . Michelle Nunn?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Posts in a similar vein appeared at Daily Kos &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/story\/2013\/12\/02\/1259603\/-GA-Sen-Conservative-Georgia-Newspaper-Praises-Michelle-Nunn-D#\" target=\"_blank\">GA-Sen: Conservative GA Newspaper Praises Michelle Nunn (D), Mum On Support For GOP Candidates<\/a> &#8212; and at Talking Points Memo &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/livewire\/conservative-georgia-newspaper-praises-michelle-nunn\" target=\"_blank\">Conservative Georgia Newspaper Praises Senate Dem Candidate Michelle Nunn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The editorial desk at the Athens Banner Herald <a href=\"http:\/\/onlineathens.com\/opinion\/2013-12-02\/editors-desk-heres-how-read-editorial-nunn\" target=\"_blank\">noted all these posts and had this to say<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nAt Peach Pundit, Bill Dawers suggests it will be \u00e2\u20ac\u0153interesting to see if she gets positive press like this from conservative voices in other corners of the state.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know whether I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d go as far as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153pdogcomedy\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in assessing the impact of the Morning News editorial, but I do believe it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s likely that \u00e2\u20ac\u0153conservative voices in other corners of the state\u00e2\u20ac\u009d might give Nunn some \u00e2\u20ac\u0153positive press.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>I also believe that whatever \u00e2\u20ac\u0153positive press\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Nunn may get in conservative corners of the state, it will be intended less as praise for her than as a subtle warning to the GOP and its voters that launching a hard-right tea-party-style candidate in the Senate race \u00e2\u20ac\u201d read particularly Broun \u00e2\u20ac\u201d might be a mistake.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, it seems very likely that the Republican candidates for the Georgia Senate seat being vacated by Saxby Chambliss will spend several months in 2014 stumbling further and further to the right. <\/p>\n<p>I wouldn&#8217;t yet say that Nunn is the early favorite, or that she has even odds at this point. <\/p>\n<p>But we&#8217;re looking at a very close Senate race in 2014, one that is likely to be decided by turnout and by the decisions of the 5-10 percent of voters who are somewhere near the middle.<\/p>\n<div class=\"e26b170012445c56d240655bdd03f7bf\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; margin:0px 0 0px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:300px;height:250px\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5595881567027133\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"4374909701\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n<!--CusAds0-->\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0px; margin: 0; padding: 0; clear: both;\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Obama campaign expended little money or effort in Georgia in 2012, but he still took 45.5 percent of the vote in Georgia.
